In Celebration of MHS Class of 1958

A Tribute and Celebration

We were the class of 1958, members of the Greatest Generation as well as children of the Greatest Generation. Born in 1940, we are also called members of the Traditional Generation.

Our childhood, post World War II, "was the best of times . . . it was the age of wisdom . . . it was the epoch of belief . . .it was the season of Light . . . it was the spring of hope . . . we had everything before us . . .we were all going direct to Heaven . . . ." (A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens.) At least, that's the way I felt about it. We were truly blessed.

Will Rogers Quotes

Time to insert more humor into our lives. How about some old fashioned Will Rogers quotes? Send me your favorites to post. scribe564@bellsouth.net

"On account of being a democracy and run by the people, we are the only nation in the world that has to keep a government four years, no matter what it does."

"There ought to be one day-just one-when there is open season on senators."

""The man with the best job in the country is the vice President. All he has to do is get up every morning and say, 'How's the President?'"

"The United States investigates everything-usually after it's dead."

"Elections are a good deal like marriages. There's no accounting for anyone's taste. Every time we see a bridegroom we wonder why she ever picked him, and it's the same with public officials."
"If all politicians fished instead of spoke publicly, we would be at peace with the world."

"Politics is the best show in America. I love animals and I love politicians and I love to watch both of 'em play either back home in their native state or after they have been captured and sent to the zoo or to Washington."

"If we ever pass out as a great nation we ought to put on our tombstone, 'America died from a delusion that she has moral leadership."

"We are all here for a spell; get all the good laughs you can."

"Try to live your life so that you wouldn't be afraid to sell the family parrot to the town gossip."

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

"Broad-minded is just another way of saying a fellow is too lazy to form an opinion."

Those were great for a good laugh ... some were just a chuckle ... but one really stopped me cold. The one about the delusion of moral leadership ... Will was right on the money and unfortunately it has only gotten worse with time.

I did not really spend lots of time pondering the quotes but one thought I had was wondering what Will Rogers would have to say about our country now - not just government but everything. Also, like you that one about the delusion of moral leadership stopped me cold.
