In Celebration of MHS Class of 1958

A Tribute and Celebration

We were the class of 1958, members of the Greatest Generation as well as children of the Greatest Generation. Born in 1940, we are also called members of the Traditional Generation.

Our childhood, post World War II, "was the best of times . . . it was the age of wisdom . . . it was the epoch of belief . . .it was the season of Light . . . it was the spring of hope . . . we had everything before us . . .we were all going direct to Heaven . . . ." (A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens.) At least, that's the way I felt about it. We were truly blessed.

Amanda Bailey, Wife of Bob Bailey

Amanda Bailey

Sep 30, 2020 (date of funeral)
Amanda Cary Bailey’s soul passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on September 28, 2020. She died of complications from COVID-19.

Amanda was born on February 6, 1938 to proud and loving parents, Louis Andrew Cary and Lorene Hughes Cary in Yazoo City, Mississippi and lived for most of her years through high school at Sherwood on Wolf Lake. She attended Mississippi State College for Women (now MUW) in Columbus for one year, after which she married John Hayes Dent, Sr. of Kinkead Plantation on Eagle Bend Road, along the Yazoo River. With John, she gave birth to three adorable children, Mollie Cary Dent, John Hayes Dent, Jr. and Richard Hughes Dent. She spent her days raising children while John farmed with his twin brother, Jim.

In God’s providence, Amanda became a widow at the early age of 27. Later, in 1967 Amanda married Robert J Bailey (Bob) who became the fortunate husband and dad to a full-sized family. Bob and Amanda were married for more than 53 years and enjoyed raising the family, taking joy in numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren who were added to the fold over the years.

Amanda and Bob raised the children in First Presbyterian Church where she faithfully taught Sunday School to the high school class and many Ladies Bible Studies. In addition, Amanda was a popular and sought after ladies luncheon and retreat speaker throughout Mississippi and neighboring states. For many years, Amanda audited theology classes at Reformed Theological Seminary and held the unofficial title of having accumulated the most classroom hours and the least credit hours of any student ever attending RTS. She was known and well respected by many a young seminary student, awed by her knowledge of the subject at hand.

In Bob’s profession as a local banker and later as an executive officer at Reformed Theological Seminary, Amanda was a valuable asset and lent her beauty and glowing personality to every occasion.

Amanda is preceded in death by her parents, Loius Andrew Cary and Lorene Hughes Cary, husband, John Hayes Dent, Sr., daughter, Mollie Dent Stock, granddaughter, Margaret Amanda (Maggie) Jones and grandson, William Stokes Jones.

She is survived by her husband, Robert J. (Bob) Bailey, son, John Hayes Dent, Jr. (Carolyn); son, Richard Hughes Dent (Christina) and grandchildren, John Montfort Jones (Jessica), Annie Kinkead Dent, John Hayes Dent III, Cary Kathleen Dent, Margaret LaVergn Dent, Andrew Knox Dent and Robert Kinkead Dent; and great grandchildren, Mollie Kinkead Jones and Walker Stokes Jones.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church, Yazoo City, MS with graveside to follow at Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin King Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are recommended to Reformed Theological Seminary for the Maggie and Stokes Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, 5422 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, MS 39209; or The Voice of the Martyrs, 1815 SE Bison Rd, Bartlesville, OK 74006.

O God our Father, Creator of all the living, we entrust to Your gentle care all those we love who have gone before us; and have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again. . . .
Eternal rest, grant unto Amanda E. Massey, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May the souls of the faithful departed

Dr. Walter Robert "Bob" Brown, deceased

photo

Memphis - Walter Robert "Bob" Brown passed away in Memphis, Tennessee on Monday, June 22, 2020. Bob was born on May 22, 1940 in Meridian, Mississippi where he was raised to be a perfect gentleman - ever kind, considerate and thoughtful in all his encounters with others without a trace of hauteur. He earned his bachelor's degree at Millsaps College in 1962 and went on to Emory University to pursue graduate studies in early modern European history. He received a master's degree in 1963. He subsequently completed Emory's doctoral program and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1973.

In 1965, employment as an instructor of history at the University of Memphis brought Bob ((or "Dr. Brown" as he was known to his students) to Memphis where he blossomed as a teacher who made a lasting impression on his students. Inspired by his example, many went on to pursue teaching careers. He was very generous with his time, devoting considerable personal attention to each interested student and each piece of his students' written work. His dedication and excellence as a teacher did not go unnoticed. He won numerous teaching and advising awards, including the prestigious W. Russell Smith Award for Teaching Excellence - the highest honor for teaching distinction in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Memphis. What Dr. Brown's students appear to have valued most were the questions he coaxed them to ask about the forces that bring about political, social and cultural change and how they are interconnected, if at all.

Dr. Brown's contributions to the history department at the University of Memphis include his service as Assistant Chair and Scheduler from 1987 to 2011 and his unofficial role as wise counselor to his colleagues. Valuing his wisdom, reasonableness, common sense and sense of humor, they often turned to him for advice on an array of departmental matters. Upon his retirement from the University in 2015 after 50 years of service, Aram Goudsouzian, then Chair of the History Department, observed:

"He is a brilliant teacher. Most of us have never met anyone as widely read, as intellectually curious, as appreciative of humanity in all its beauty and tragedy. Just as important, he is a man of exceptional grace, a true gentleman who cares for all those around him. For most of his long career, he advised our undergraduate students. He did not just help them choose courses - he was a true mentor, forging personal bonds with the young and old, man and woman, gay and straight, black and white."

Valuing "humanity in all its beauty and tragedy," Bob embraced Memphis theater, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Concerts International, and the Brooks Museum of Art, contributing substantially to each. For over two decades, he served as Adjunct Curator of Decorative Arts at Brooks Museum where he curated numerous exhibitions, advised on countless acquisitions for the permanent collection, and generated outstanding programming that sparked interest in and appreciation of the decorative arts and material culture within in the Memphis community. For Brooks' staff, Board and members of the Decorative Arts Trust, it was Bob's "deep intelligence" and "quiet humor" that set him apart.

Bob is survived by his lifelong partner, Richard Tanner, and countless friends and admirers who loved him dearly and will miss him greatly.

A Memorial Service celebrating Bob's life will be held on a yet to be determined date. Details regarding time and place will be furnished in a subsequent notice. Donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the Brooks Museum's Decorative Arts Trust, the Department of History at the University or to any charitable organization of the donor's choice.

God our Father, Creator of all the living, we entrust to Your gentle care
 all those we love who have gone before us;
and have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again. . . .

Eternal rest, grant unto Bob Brown, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May the souls of the faithful departed
through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Obituary of Lix J. Fruge', Jr.

Graveside Services for Mr. Lix J. Fruge’, Jr. will be Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with Reverend John Branning officiating. Interment will follow graveside rites. Robert Barham Family Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
Mr. Fruge’, 80, of Meridian, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2020 at his home.
Mr. Fruge’ grew up in Meridian. He attended Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN before going to the University of Alabama where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. He joined his father, Lix Fruge’ Sr, at his family run business, Fruge’ Oil Company, which was credited with bringing Shell branded gasoline to Meridian. He worked side by side with his son until this year thus making the business one of the oldest Shell jobberships in Mississippi. In 1967, he married Peggi Brown and together they built one of the first houses on Dalewood Lake. This helped to shape his love of water skiing. They raised two children, Melissa, born in 1968, and L.J., born in 1970.
Mr. Fruge’ loved fishing, particularly at Dogwood Lake, and savored the drive out there with his dog. He also loved hunting and working at the hunting camp. He especially looked forward to his annual white tail deer hunt with friends in the hill country of Texas. He was an avid Alabama football fan. He loved to cook, especially gumbo, and he was a pro at making Brandy Alexanders. He also loved listening to an Elvis album.
He served as a long time board member on Citizens National Bank. He also was a member of the Roundtable Investment Club of Meridian.
For anyone that knew Lix, it was easy to see he had a heart of gold and had a smile in his eyes. He would help out a person in need without thinking twice. He adored his grandchildren, and always had a good story to tell that would leave you laughing. He kept his style in check with his flattop haircut! He enjoyed sponsoring local athletic teams and was quick to lend support to any local Meridian charities.
Mr. Lix is survived by his son, L.J. Fruge’, III (Nicola); grandchildren Jay Fruge’, Caroline Fruge’, Marguerite Marquez, John Marquez, and Lilly Marquez. Brother, Don Fruge’ (Mary Ann); Son-in-law Johnny Marquez (Margaret) as well as a host of extended family members.
Mr. Fruge’ is preceded in death by his wife, Peggi Fruge’; daughter, Melissa Marquez; and parents, Lix J. Fruge’, Sr. and Rosemary Fruge’.
Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at robertbarhamffh.com.

and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May the souls of the faithful departed
through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

REPORT ON CLASS ZOOM MEETING ON SUNDAY

I think everyone who gathered yesterday on Zoom will say that it was fun and so gratifying to see our friends and share. For those who are wary of such a gathering, politics and other controversial subjects did not come up. That is a rule of this group. We simply shared our lives and personal stories along with news of other friends.

It was easy for me to tune in – I simply clicked the link that Tee provided and lo I was there with everyone. We are going to meet again in a month, on first Sunday at 5:00 EST. A notice will be sent out, and we hope more join us for this special time together. Thank you Anne and Tee for making this possible.

One of the things I shared on Zoom was about a very precious black woman from Mississippi. I discovered her this last Friday, thanks to a local friend on Face Book. By Saturday, I had added a page to the website of my Franciscan community, Our Lady of the Pearl. I told the Zoom group that I would send a link to her page so that they could learn about this spirited and strong woman. As many indicated in my research, she was a force to be reckoned, talented and with a beautiful singing voice. Her name was Sr. Thea Bowman, FSPA. She was a Franciscan sister and lived a remarkable life of love, service and joy.
