In Celebration of MHS Class of 1958

A Tribute and Celebration

We were the class of 1958, members of the Greatest Generation as well as children of the Greatest Generation. Born in 1940, we are also called members of the Traditional Generation.

Our childhood, post World War II, "was the best of times . . . it was the age of wisdom . . . it was the epoch of belief . . .it was the season of Light . . . it was the spring of hope . . . we had everything before us . . .we were all going direct to Heaven . . . ." (A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens.) At least, that's the way I felt about it. We were truly blessed.

Sure, we do sorta look like Dickensian kids out of “Oliver Twist” in the 2nd grade over on the "poor side of town". I don't remember a May Day celebration at Witherspoon. But, in our class, Janie Miner was our only teacher for grades 2, 3 and 4. In those small teams she formed, we learned an awfully lot about the world and about our little selves... notwithstanding our side of the tracks.

I think I wore out my first pair of shoes from the inside because of all the calluses built up from going barefooted just like several of the children in our picture.

Janie Miner, at Witherspoon, Cora Morton, at Kate Griffin and Marguerite Jenkins, at MHS were those teachers who had a profound impact... by helping me discover who I was.
