Reunion - MHS Classes of '55 & '56 - We Are Invited

The MHS Classes of '55 and '56 are having a joint class reunion on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2, 2011 in Meridian. It's open to anyone from any class year at MHS. The schedule of events will be coming out soon.

The location of the reunion activities will be the new Holiday Inn. The new Holiday Inn has been constructed about where the old Nelva Restaurant used to be located on the north frontage road of I-20 & 59. Reservations are now available. Be certain you tell them you are with the MHS reunion to get a better rate.

There are other very nice hotels in the immediate vicinity of the Holiday Inn in the event it's booked when you try to get reservations. The Hampton Inn and the new Hilton Garden Inn are both about a city block to the north of the new Holiday Inn.

2010 Mississippi Lions All State Band

The 2010 Mississippi Lions All State Band during practice in Ellisville, Mississippi in recent weeks. They won first place in international competition this past week in Australia.

Bob Bailey's Mother, Velma Garrison Bailey

Graveside services for Velma Garrison Bailey will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery with Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Bailey, 100, of Meridian, died Monday, Nov., 16, 2009, at Anderson Regional Medical Center. Born on November 26, 1908, she was a lifelong member of 15th Avenue Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bailey will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and faithful wife. Survivors include her daughter, Martha Bancroft and her husband, E.C., of Meridian; son, Bob Bailey and his wife, Amanda, of Yazoo City; granddaughters, Ann Weddington and her husband Alex of Meridian and Mollie Stock of Greenville; grandsons, Bruce Bancroft and his wife Tina of Madison, Scott Bancroft and his wife Alicia of Meridian, Hayes Dent and his wife Carolyn of Jackson and Richard Dent of Denver, Colo.; great-granddaughters, Lindsey Bancroft and Bailey Weddington of Meridian, Sloan Bancroft of Ridgeland, Trinity Bancroft of Madison, Margaret Dent of Jackson and Annie Kinkead Dent and Cary Dent of Denver, Colo.; great-grandsons, Conner Bancroft and Eli Bancroft of Meridian, Hayes Dent III and Kinkead Dent of Jackson and Knox Dent of Denver, Colo.; and caregiver, Shirley Adkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Bailey; son, Johnnie B. Bailey Jr.; parents, George Laurence and Annie Ford Garrison; sister, Exie Beagle; great-granddaughter, Maggie Jones; and great-grandson, Stokes Jones.

The family requests memorials be made to 15th Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund, 1318 15th Avenue, Meridian, Miss. 39301. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at 15th Avenue Baptist Church.

More Memories of World War II

As we grow older we tend to look back in our memories for events that shaped us, our families, and our country. For many of us, even though we were young children, it was World War II. Many of our dads, uncles, and maybe even big brothers, served our country in some fashion during WW II. The men and women of the Greatest Generation are leaving us at an alarming rate everyday. We need to thank them now while they are still with us.

I have several early childhood recollections of World War II in Meridian. I remember troop trains going through Meridian. There were also trains coming through that were loaded with tanks, trucks, and artillery pieces. A War Bond Drive event sticks in my memory.

The instance I suppose that I remember the most revolves around Dickens' Store which was at Royal Road and State Boulevard. On occasion my mother or dad would stop there and buy me a half-pint of chocolate milk. One day when I was about three or four years of age we stopped at Mr. Dickens' store. My mother asked for a chocolate milk for me. There was none available. I still remember what Mr. Dickens told her. "With the war on most of the chocolate milk has been going to the schools here lately." I was one disappointed young fellow!

Two of us in our church, who both have Air Force backgrounds, take an elderly man, who is also a member of our church, to lunch from time to time. When we find an aviation book having to do with the B-24 bomber we'll buy a copy and give it to him.

Why do two sixty-something men take a ninety-something man to lunch now and then? It's quite simple. This ninety-something man is one of our heroes. This man was a navigator on a B-24 bomber in the European theatre. He flew on the 1 Aug 43 bombing raid of the German oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. The Ploesti mission was one of the most difficult and dangerous bombing raids of the entire war. This elderly gentleman – when he was a lad in his twenties - was risking his life several times each week to preserve freedom for people everywhere. He did this while we were just small children.

Again, be sure to thank our veterans while we still have the time.
